This book has been a favorite of mine since I first read it in my early teen years, and the sheer beauty of its storytelling never fails to take my breath away. While I'm not generally a fan of the fantasy genre, there are imaginative twists aplenty, and I'm not talking about your usual fare of hairy-footed midgets and wand-wielding teenagers - this book is the first in a trilogy that is actually meant to be an interpretation of sorts of Milton's Paradise Lost (probably my favorite work of English-language literature ever), and explores, through metaphor and myth and with surprising depth and clarity, the fallibility of power both human and divine.
Recent Films
Evil Dead II - There is not much to be said about this that hasn't been said already. I'm a whore for a good slasher comedy, and I loved the gleeful, deranged hilarity that pervaded every moment.
Where the Wild Things Are - Controversial for many reasons, I thought it was a beautiful, poetic and ultimately unflinching and honest homage to childhood. Some may find its departure from the serene simplicity of the book and its bizarre forays into a dark Jungian landscape before entering a troubled Freudian world a bit hard to swallow. I spent the entire film alternately crying, laughing, or with jaw dropped.
Music From the Inside Out - A fascinating documentary into the lives and stories of the individuals that, collectively, contribute their skills and personalities to one of the great orchestras of the world, the Philadelphia Orchestra.
